When unresolved emotions are compensated

When unprocessed emotional material continually weaken the Spleen, the Kidneys are forced to carry more of the burden

Welcome to our 5 part series on how each organ system is linked to specific emotional state and why addressing our emotional needs have implications for our health.

  1. Spleen = worry

  2. Kidney= fear

  3. Liver = anger

  4. Lungs = grief

  5. Heart = joy

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), when we talk about the organ, we are not primarily referring to the anatomical organ that Western medicine describes. We’re talking about a functional system — an energetic network of processes.Think of it less as an organ and more as a set of responsibilities in the body–mind -spirit ecosystem.

By gently addressing your hurts and emotional patterns, you may not only feel more internally supported, but may also begin to see shifts or relief in certain physical health issues as well.

Kidneys=fear

Fear has a unique ability to quietly reshape the internal landscape of the body. In TCM, fear is not just an emotion of the mind—it is an energetic force that directly impacts the Kidneys, the reservoir of life vitality we possess. The Kidneys govern our sense of safety, our willpower, and our ability to move forward. When Kidney energy is strong, there is an inner steadiness. When it weakens, fear begins to surface more easily—sometimes subtly as hesitation, insecurity, or a quiet sense of instability.

What is less often understood is how fear and emotional strain indirectly weaken the Spleen, and how this creates a cycle of deeper depletion.

The Spleen is responsible for transforming nourishment into energy. This includes not only food, but also emotional experience. When there is an emotional hurt, it needs to be held, loved, supported. When emotions—especially fear, prolonged uncertainty, or unresolved distress—are not fully acknowledged, they place a continuous burden on the Spleen.

When the Spleen compensates with the Kidneys

Over time, this burden weakens the Spleen’s ability to extract sufficient energy from nourishment. The body still needs energy to function, to think, to heal, and to maintain stability. When the Spleen cannot meet these demands, the body has no choice but to compensate.

It begins to draw from the Kidneys.

The Kidneys store essence—the most fundamental reserve of vitality. This reserve exists to sustain life when daily energy production is insufficient. In moments of acute stress or temporary depletion, this system protects you. But when emotional strain and fear persist for long periods, this compensation becomes chronic.

Fear weakens the Kidneys directly

At the same time, the weakened Spleen continuously draws from the Kidneys to compensate for its reduced ability to produce energy. This creates a feedback loop:

  • Fear weakens the Kidneys.

  • Weakened Kidneys reduce the foundation that supports the Spleen.

  • A weakened Spleen produces less energy.

  • The body draws even more deeply from the Kidneys.

  • As Kidney reserves decline further, fear becomes more pronounced.

Over time, this cycle can manifest as deep fatigue, loss of inner stability, lower back problems, increased emotional sensitivity, poor digestion, and a persistent sense of depletion.

This is why unprocessed fear is so taxing to the system. It is not only an emotional experience—it becomes a physiological drain on your deepest reserves of vitality.

When you give your emotions proper attention, you interrupt this cycle. You reduce the burden on the Spleen, allowing it to resume its role of generating energy from nourishment. As the Spleen strengthens, it no longer needs to draw as heavily from the Kidneys. This preserves Kidney essence, stabilizes the nervous system, and gradually restores a sense of internal safety.

Protect your vitality

In this way, attending to fear is not simply emotional care. It is an act of protecting your deepest vitality.

  • When the Spleen is supported, it protects the Kidneys.

  • When the Kidneys are protected, fear loses its foundation.

  • And when fear no longer governs the system, the body regains its ability to restore itself from within.

Experiment

When there’s fear and you want to learn more about this feeling you can’t shake off.

Here’s what you can do: Listen to this song: By Your Side, Ane Brun.

Close your eyes to the outside world so that you can look/listen/feel/smell your inner world.

Place your hand on your heart to connect with your heart’s intelligence and say to yourself, “Thank you for alerting me to this feeling. Tell me more about this fear I’m feeling.”

Be patient and gentle with what might emerge.
