Why Eating the 8 Treasures Work

4 Seasons, Moon Cycle, and Menstrual Cycle Alignment

In TCM, the female body is viewed as a microcosm of the natural world. For a woman, your internal rhythm shifts every decade and you will need nutritional support. We approach this need with the 8 Treasures.

The 8 Treasures Soup/Congee is more than just a meal, it’s a staple in TCM that doubles as a delicious, comforting porridge. While the traditional ingredients may vary, the "eight" serves as a framework to a specific combination of grains, nuts, and dried beans chosen for their cumulative health benefits.

People have been reaching for this bowl for centuries, and not just because it’s filling. I’ve updated the 8 treasures to align with the seasons, moon cycle, and menstrual cycle for optimal efficiency and efficacy. Here’s why the 8 treasures are worth a spot in your rotation:

  • Digestive Harmony: Because the ingredients are cooked until it’s soft and creamy, it is incredibly gentle on the stomach. It’s the "gold standard" for recovery after an illness.

  • Nutrient Density: You’re getting a massive hit of fiber, plant-based protein, and antioxidants in a single sitting.

  • Energy Without the Crash: Unlike sugary cereals, the complex carbohydrates in the beans and grains provide sustained energy throughout the morning.

  • Blood & Skin Health: In TCM, the combination of red dates and goji berries is the ultimate "beauty tonic," believed to improve circulation and give the skin a healthy glow.

For our purpose, we aligned the 8 Treasures with the four seasons, moon cycle, and menstrual cycle. Here is why this dual approach is so effective for the 8 Treasures:

1. Protecting the External (4 seasons)

The seasons dictate the environment your body must survive in. If you eat the same "treasures" year-round, you ignore the external stressors of the climate:

  • Spring (Liver/Wind): The body needs to "unblock." Using Mung Beans and Coix Seed prevents the rising Spring energy from turning into headaches or high blood pressure.

  • Summer (Heart/Heat): High temperatures deplete fluids. Ingredients like Lily Buds act like an internal "coolant," preventing the summer heat from causing insomnia or heavy, "hot" periods.

  • Late Summer (Spleen/Dampness): The climate is often characterized by "Damp-Heat"—it’s humid, sticky, and can make the body feel heavy or bloated. Chinese Yam, Coix Seed, and Foxnuts to "drain dampness"

  • Autumn (Lung/Dryness): This is the season of "wilting." Peanuts (with skin) and Black Sesame provide the healthy fats needed to lubricate the skin and lungs.

  • Winter (Kidney/Cold): The body must "store." Black Soy Beans and Walnuts are "Kidney-shaped" and dark-colored, which TCM says reinforces the skeletal system and hormonal foundation.

2. Supporting the Internal (Menstrual Cycle, Menopause)

The menstrual cycle dictates your Resource Allocation. Your body's needs change every 7 days:

  • New moon/Menstruation: During menstruation, you lose blood. You need the Red Dates and Adzuki Beans to ensure the "old" leaves and the "new" is supported and to prevent fatigue.

  • Waxing moon/Follicular: Black Rice and Goji Berries act as the bricks and mortar for your uterine lining.

  • Full moon/Ovulation: This phase requires a burst of Yang (heat). Using Walnuts and Foxnuts provides the "fire" necessary for a healthy transition.

  • Waning moon/Luteal: When Liver Qi gets stuck (PMS), Lily Buds and Lotus Seeds are the "peacekeepers" that smooth out irritability and breast tenderness.

3. Supporting efficiency and efficacy

Eventually, the Spleen (your digestive engine) slows down. If you eat Winter foods (heavy, black beans) in the Summer, your Spleen becomes bogged down with Dampness, leading to weight gain and brain fog.

By pairing the Eight Treasures to both cycles (seasons and menstrual/lunar), you achieve:

  1. Efficiency: Your body doesn't have to fight the weather and your hormones at the same time.

  2. Prevention: You address any symptoms (dryness, heat, mood swings) before they become chronic.

  3. Bioavailability: You are eating the right nutrients at the exact moment your receptors are primed to use them.

4. Adjust for global warming

Learn to listen to the earth. If it is Start of Autumn but the temperature is still 90°F (32°C), it is better to continue "Clear Heat" protocols (like mung beans) rather than switching to "Moistening" autumn tonics too early.
