A TCM-based diet centered on treating your scalloped tongue by following the four pillars:

  1. Nourishing your digestive system

  2. Completing your emotional processes

  3. Drinking herbs

  4. Soaking your feet

You’re here because you’re focused on prevention.

You’re here because you’re consistent and dedicated to your health.

You’re here because according to western medicine, you’re mostly healthy, but you sense something is off.

You’ve been told that different tongues have different thickness and shape (and maybe you do).

You’re been told you’re dehydrated (and maybe you you are).

So you drink more water, but it doesn’t resolve the issue.

You exercise (HIIT, strength train, etc) to see if it helps.

You see your therapist to ameliorate your stress.

You sleep more to see if it helps. You take naps.

Your TCM doctor says you have Spleen Qi deficiency and dampness.

You loyally take herbs. You go as far as taking herbs every month.

You avoid dairy, alcohol, salads, sugar, iced drinks, fried foods and spicy foods.

You incorporate more bone broth, sweet potato, pumpkin soup and eat more nutritious foods.

You wait patiently. You’ve worked on your hydration, exercise, stress, and/or nutritional deficiencies. You’re doing all of the things.

And you still have a scalloped tongue.

Here’s my take:

The scalloped tongue won’t just go away.

It’s the beginning of a chronic problem that gets worse with age.

A swollen, scalloped tongue has implications for future problems such as chronic sinus issues, eczema, high cholesterol, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or even cognitive decline.

Healing your scalloped tongue requires daily effort and intention.

You have to continue to exercise, eat clean, and hydrate.

When you fix your scalloped tongue, a lot of the other health problems dissolve.

You’re changing the internal terrain to disrupt the environment that created your ailments.

Healing your scalloped tongue is not something that just happens to you, it’s an inside job.

When you take care of your internal environment—like your nutrition—you’re creating the conditions for your body to thrive.

Setting expectations

Healing your scalloped tongue will take time. It is a process. Please be patient with yourself. Longstanding deficiency will take longer to heal. If your scalloped tongue has been present for years, your body has adapted to that way of life and it will take longer for your tongue to normalize.

Remember: daily habits continue to affect the tongue.

Helpful tips when you commit to healing your scalloped tongue

  1. You’ll have to be intentional, consistent and most of all, self loving.

  2. Foods to limit: It’s best to avoid eating salads, cold smoothies, iced drinks, sugar, dairy, fried foods, spicy foods, and alcohol. It’ll help to eat a very clean diet. Think oatmeal, stews, and soups. Commit to this way of life for at least one month. Eat smaller portions. It will help reduce the fatigue you feel after meals.

Side story: After 2-3 months, when I’ve gotten into the habit of eating the 8 treasures, I was flexible when I needed to be. I’ve had a drink to celebrate my friend’s birthday. A friend made me a garden fresh salad. The goal isn’t to be rigid, but if you can, in your first month, focus on the avoid food list, it will significantly help your tongue and overall digestive system. I was still able to get results when I had the foods on the avoid list, while following a very clean diet.

3. Exercise: Move your body! Walk, run, swim, bike, do yoga. Your Spleen loves movement so that the sticky dampness moves. Remember to dry your wet hair and change out of your sweaty clothes so that your body isn’t lingering in external dampness.

4. Sleep: As best you can, sleep is restorative. Sleep before 10pm. The earlier the better. Also, a 20 minute nap can be tremendously supportive of your fatigue.

5. Herbs: Besides diet, you might need herbal support. You’ll need to drain your dampness and support your spleen. And typically, you’ll also need to stoke your Kidney yang fire, while nourishing your liver.

6. Start with your emotions: Your Spleen does far more than just process nutrients; it digests your emotions and life experiences.
When your Spleen is strong and balanced, you navigate life with ease, offering support to others from a "full cup" while remaining nourished and sustained.

However, this balance is easily disrupted when you override your Spleen’s innate intelligence. When that "gut feeling" that tells you something is off and you ignore it or keep thinking about it.
That instinct is your Spleen trying to protect you. When you consistently push past your gut instincts to hold the emotional weight of everyone else, your Spleen becomes depleted.

It simply cannot break down your lunch while simultaneously trying to "digest" the needs of those around you.

Eventually, this internal strain manifests physically. This is why healing a scalloped tongue and clearing internal dampness requires more than just dietary changes; it requires healing your unprocessed emotions.

TCM can help regulate your physiology, but it cannot fully stabilize your system if an ongoing emotional signal continues to disrupt organ function. In fact, TCM has always been clear about this—chronic emotional states such as worry and overthinking are not just contributors to imbalance, they are primary causes.

It’s like trying to fill a bucket while a hole remains open.
